Jimmy Mitchell Handicap Tournament 2018

posted Jun 24, 2018, 12:03 PM by Fort Matilda

It was another good turnout for the annual handicap tournament on Saturday 23rd June 2018, with the weather staying warm and dry. Teams were picked out the hat and handicaps were given on couples’ ability. As always Susan found it difficult to give out handicaps as there were so many good pairings. We played a round-robin, with the winners going through to the semi-final.

Due to such close games, we had a play off for the last semi-final place. Frank McKenna/Marlene Riekie, and Raymond Norris/Joan McKillop narrowly missed out on a place. Alan Clark, serving underhand due to an injury, and his partner Adrienne Egan played a steady game to win against Eleanor and Fran. In the other semi-final, Dylan Crawford was playing strong tennis and plenty of winners, and partnered with Kevin Clark won against Chris Cullen and Marianne Stetz.

The final was first to five games with sudden death at 40-40, and looked like it was all over when Dylan and Kevin were 4-2 up, but the determination and steady play of Alan and Adrienne saw the game go to 4-4. It was all down to Dylan holding his serve. All four players held their nerve and played some great shots, and it got to 40-40 and sudden death for the match. After some great play by Dylan and Kevin, they just lost out to the winners Alan and Adrienne on that final point.

The winners were presented with their cups and the players enjoyed afternoon tea at the courts. There were also a couple of spot prizes for best shot and player of the day. During the first game, Marlene Riekie played a superb drop shot to take the first game – winner, best shot. During the tournament it was noted that our new member Oyinkan Durowoju played some wonderful ground strokes – winner, player of the day.

Thanks go to everyone who took part and made it such an enjoyable day and also to Lesley for organising the wonderful afternoon tea and prizes.

Above report by Susan Soutar.

The club would also like to thank Susan for continuing the very difficult task of doing the handicaps and organising play on the day. It is much appreciated, and Susan continues to make this event a fun day.

Jimmy Mitchell Handicap Doubles Tournament 17th June 2017 - Results

posted Jun 17, 2017, 11:30 AM by Fort Matilda

The Jimmy Mitchell handicap doubles tournament was held on Saturday afternoon, with more than twenty members turning up to play and watch. With a wide range of abilities the handicaps can be a lottery! We had some very close games and interesting tactics from some of the men!! The first rounds were timed, and this made all the players work very hard to accumulate as many games as they could to make it through to the semi-finals. In group one Calum and Dany won all their matches but failed to win enough games to get through to the next round. The final was a very closely fought match with Marlene and Kevin taking the lead at 4-2 against Adrienne and Adam, but the later pairing proved too strong and finally took the set to 6-5. A wonderful afternoon tea of sandwiches and cakes was enjoyed by all and even the weather was perfect for playing. Lesley had organised great prizes again and all our winners were delighted to take home the coveted keyrings! This is a relaxed tournament which can be enjoyed by all members of the club and it's great to see first team players partnering up with not so experienced players giving everyone a chance of winning.

Club Championships 2016

posted Aug 21, 2016, 8:35 AM by Fort Matilda

Despite the bad weather yesterday, our finals day when ahead, albeit a little bit delayed!

The men's singles was won by Mark McGrath, after an extremely close match with Calum Roberts. The match could have went either way, but Mark managed to see it out 7-6 6-4 to win the club championships for the first time!

The ladies singles was won by Diane Fung, after Adrienne Egan put up a good fight with many of the games going to duece. Diane was to strong in the end however and won the match 6-1 6-1!

The boys under 16s was a very close match, between Ross Murdoch and Dylan Crawford. The paid met in he Greenock and District final were it was extremely close and the match didn't disappoint. Dylan managed to win the match in a third set tie break. The score was 4-6 6-4 7-6!

The men's doubles was won by Calum Roberts and Mark McGrath. Alan Clark and Paul Brown were up against it from the start with Paul carrying an injury, but there was some close rally's, with Mark and Calum finally beating Paul and Alan to win the title. The match finished 6-0 6-3, however I think there will be an unofficial re-match when Paul is fully fit.

On Friday night the ladies doubles was played which was won by Alison Daisley and Fiona Riddell. This was a very high standard match going to a third set, were Diane Fung and Kath Gairns did what they could to win, but Alison and Fiona proved too strong winning 3-6 6-4 7-6!

Lastly, the mixed doubles was won by Anna Daisley and Cameron Hyde. They were a storng partnership the whole tournament and managed to convincingly beat Mark and Susan 6-2 6-3.

Well done to everyone who took part.
